Mike Burkepile Named Southside High School Teacher of the Year

Fort Smith Public Schools is proud to announce that orchestra director, Mike Burkepile, has been named Southside High School Teacher of the Year. A dedicated educator and accomplished musician, Mr. Burkepile has built a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and passion for music, inspiring students and colleagues alike.

"Every decision Mr. Burkepile makes revolves around how it will affect students," a colleague shared. "He speaks honestly but diplomatically, always advocating for what is best for students, whether it’s in the classroom or at regional meetings." His leadership extends beyond Southside, earning immense respect from orchestra directors across the state.

Through his involvement with the Fort Smith Symphony, Mr. Burkepile provides his students with opportunities to experience professional performances firsthand. He established an usher program that allows students to attend concerts for free, reinforcing the connection between their learning and real-world artistry. In the classroom, he ensures that every student—regardless of skill level—feels valued, modifying music to accommodate varying abilities and offering extra support before and after school. His students don’t just play music; they experience the joy of teamwork and personal growth.

More than an educator, Mr. Burkepile is a mentor and role model.
