A School of Innovation

Personalized Learning for a Future-Ready Education

STAR Academy is an innovative, self-paced learning option that allows students to accelerate through their core classes at their own pace. By advancing through coursework early, students create space in their schedules for career and technical education, Advanced Placement courses, concurrent credit classes, specialized electives, and more. This flexible approach provides students the freedom to tailor their education to their individual strengths and goals.

Whether students need extra time for challenging subjects or want to move ahead quickly, STAR Academy provides a unique academic environment with one-on-one access to teachers. Students develop essential skills like time management, organization, and self-discipline while working toward academic excellence.

What makes STAR Academy different?

As a STAR student, you have the freedom to choose where to spend your time during STAR periods. You can work with any STAR teacher in their classroom and even stay with one teacher for multiple periods if needed.

The curriculum is self-paced, allowing you to accelerate in areas where you feel confident. For instance, if you finish Sophomore English in March, you can begin Junior English immediately. STAR Academy also provides extra help in areas where additional support is needed.

A unique feature of STAR Academy is that the curriculum is created by Southside teachers—it is not a generic program purchased from a third party. STAR teachers are present in the classroom to facilitate new material and provide one-on-one support as you work to complete your coursework.

This is not a virtual program. All work takes place in person, with teachers available throughout class periods.

We have a lot going on outside of school, like sports, school activities, and volunteering. Being able to get done during school what I would have to do after school means that I don't have homework to stress about
